After a dismal opening to the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, the Super Eagles were left to lament their carelessness in front of goal. Before their crucial meeting against the hosts on Thursday night, Nigeria's Group A campaign began with a dismal 1-1 draw in Abidjan. They were unable to match the achievements of Ivory Coast, who defeated Guinea-Bissau 2-0 to open the tournament on Saturday night.
Iban Salvador Edu shot cleanly into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, shocking injury-hit Nigeria into a deficit against the flow of play despite a commanding start at the Olympic Stadium in Ebimpe. Equatorial Guinea's giant-killers were not ahead for long, though, as Nigeria's attacking maestro Victor Osimhen headed home a header from close range after an Ademola Lookman cross deflected.
Moses Before the half, Simon gave Nigeria a goal against the woodwork. The Super Eagles increased their pressure in the second half, but they were unable to score the elusive winner.
